Balsa boards on your way to the Boardmasters baby
If you're heading down to the Boardmasters this weekend, pop into the Sandsifter to check out these stunning balsa wood boards. Being displayed are longboards, fishes and retro shapes from a collection of boards handmade in Peru.
Having been shaping balsa surfboards for more than 14 years, Tamzen and Rasty reject any chemicals and plastics and instead use the properties of balsa wood to create a natural foam board. It's hard to look at these and not hugely admire the natural beauty and awesome craftsmanship.
Oh and if you're wondering where they came up with the idea of using balsa. Ecuadorians have always fished from Balsa rafts, the ancient Machiguenga culture believed their God, Tasorinchi, carved the first people on Earth out of Balsa wood! Spanish Conquistadores saw the Incas transport armies on the river and seas and gave the wood its Spanish name: Balsa meaning raft.
