Brooklyn Banks lost forever?

The New York City Department of Transportation have announced that they will be closing down the Brooklyn Banks until 2014.

The legendary skate spot will be used for storage while they restoring the bridge above. But this is not the first time the banks have been threatened.

Back in 2004, they were almost converted into a green park but were miraculously saved thanks to the efforts of Steve Rodriguez, owner of 5boro Skateboards.

Rodriguez is working with the DOT once again to ensure that the spot is not lost forever but at this time, its future is uncertain.

Below is a video of how Rodriguez pulled it off the first time. Let's hope he can do it again.

  • All you need to do to understand the significance of Brooklyn Banks is go on to Youtube and see all of the internationally significant skateboarding, bmxing and rollerblading events that have taken place over the years. At any one event there have been over 1,000 people crammed onto the brick banks to watch athletes huck themselves. I thought it was pretty bad when San Francisco lost the iconic stair ledges but if these beauties go it will be a sorry day...
