Bryson wins Cold Water Classic
South African surfer wins the WQS event in Thurso.
Royden Bryson has won the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland in epic Thurso East conditions.
The South African surfer beat Brazilian Yuri Sodre in a final that saw six foot waves, sunshine and a gentle offshore wind. It took him 25 minutes until he caught his first wave but claimed a score of 8.33 and followed up with a 5.50.
Says Royden: “I am just so excited to win. I feel like I’ve had a lot of close results recently. And to actually get there and win again feels amazing.”

But despite the competition having finished, the suspension of flights caused by the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland sees many of the surfers stranded in the far north of Scotland.
“I haven’t looked into my flight yet, but it looks like there is no way out of here at the moment,” said semi-finalist Shaun Cansdell. “However being stuck here isn’t too bad an option. It’s a choice of either getting barrelled or getting powder in the mountains a few hours away."
The O'Neill Cold Water Classic continues in Cape Town, South Africa in July.
