Chris Bertish wins Mavericks
Surfers battled it out in giant Californian waves.
Chris Bertish, took on 50 foot waves to steal victory at the Mavericks surf competition 2010 on February 13.
The South African surfer not only conquered some of the most powerful waves ever paddled into, but did so superior to other legendary big wave sliders including Eddie Aikau Invitational winner Greg Long.
Says Bertish: "It was an honour just to be here today and paddle out with these other guys. I flew 36 hours to be here, and this has been a dream come true."
Greg Long added: "The entire book of big wave surfing was rewritten today."
Unfortunately, so was the safety guide for spectators, when two 20 foot walls of water crashed onto the beach destroying equipment and washing many people onto the rocks.
BBC News reported that some people were seriously injured with broken bones, but nobody was killed.
