Dorian cartwheels into the big time
Big wave conquerors and admirers converged on the Grove Theater on 11th April to see Shane Dorian take Ride Of The Year at the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards. Far from the perfect ride, his ability to correct mid-ride won the day over Manoa Drollet during the same session at Teahupoo.
Shane Dorian (seen above) ended his ride cartwheeling into the channel, ensuring a spectacular end to a heavy ride.
The other names featuring on the honours board include: Greg Long, Maya Gabeira, Carlos Burle, Ian Walsh and Michael Brennan.
Mike Parsons took the Biggest Wave Award after a massive wave at a place he obviously feels comfortable, Cortes Bank. At 70ft+ he is in the record books as well, after winning the inaugural title in 2001 for a 66ft wave also at Cortes.
