Mick Fanning wins ASP tour
Australian surfer takes world title at Pipeline event in Hawaii.
Mick Fanning has claimed the 2009 ASP World Tour title after his good friend Joel Parkinson got knocked out of the Billabong Pipeline Masters at Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii.
Parkinson had to get at least third in the competition to be in with a chance of winning the world title but got knocked out of his heat by 23-year-old Gavin Gillette, therefore automatically handing the title to Fanning.
Says Mick: "I knew I was surfing well. It was just a matter of getting that result. I knew it was going to turn around sooner or later. I don't know, it's weird the way the world works."
The Vans Triple Crown and Billabong Pipeline Masters are still up for grabs and the competition looks set to resume onĀ December 14.
