Gilmore looking for closure at Sunset Beach
The rise of the rookie continues apace as the chance to win world title no.2 draws near at the Roxy Pro in Hawaii. It is the seventh stop of the ASP World Tour, and closest challengers Sofia Mulanovich and legend Layne Beachley need to finish well to keep the pressure on the rankings leader.
Should Stephanie Gilmore claim the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach, Mulanovich would need to make the final (4th or better) to stay in the hunt and Layne Beachley would be out of the running. If Gilmore finishes 2nd at Sunset Beach, Mulanovich needs at least an equal 7th and Beachley would need a victory for a Maui showdown.
If Gilmore finishes 5th or better, Beachley must finish at least one step ahead to bring the ASP Women’s World Title showdown to Maui. Still following?
Meanwhile the pressure is on in the men's qualifying for the World Tour, with recent Reef Pro winner Michel Bourez now guaranteed his place and an unprecedented 14 surfers still in reach of qualifying.
Should results go to form and talent, the ASP World Tour 2009 could have seven Europeans competing which is a historically significant number in an event dominated by American and Southern Hemisphere surfers. The rise of the European?!
