GlenCoe Park Project
Grassroots action to build and maintain a snow park.
Glencoe Mountain in the Scottish Highlands have launched the GlenCoe Park Project to help build and maintain their snow park.
This grassroots project was founded by Keith Johnson, Glencoe's Head of Ski and Snowboard School and Park Coordinator, and is inviting local riders to volunteer their time to help construct a progressive freestyle park without the help of massive budgets enjoyed by larger resorts.
So far the Glencoe park has been developed by a small local crew who have built the parks' rails during their weekends and are currently giving up precious riding time to build other features on the mountain.
Says Johnson: "Without the support of the whole mountain, the park wouldn’t be possible. [...] This year we hope that the mountain and the volunteers that come up to help out can keep the park in great shape, allowing the team time to ride and enjoy the rails they created.
"Chat forums are great way to let people know what’s going on up the hill and gives us an idea if the park is being well received or not. It is unfortunately the nature of the industry for people to criticise parks in general."
So instead of sitting online complaining, riders are actively encoruaged to come along with a shovel and a smile, and get involved.
"Just start riding the hill, chat with other riders, stay positive and have a laugh, and we will find you," says Johnson. "We would like people to think of the park as a ongoing project: something that will develop over the next couple of years. Stay patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day!"
