‘Going Vertical’ teaser
Are Americans or Australians responsible for the shortboard?
Australian filmmaker David Bradbury latest movie, Going Vertical, explores the contentious birth of the shortboard in 1967.
The film is due for release in Australian cinemas on March 25 and questions conventional wisdom that American shaper Dick Brewer was responsible for pioneering the modern surf stick.
As Going Vertical suggests, it may have been Australian shaper Bob McTavish who really lead the way.
Intertwined with the individual stories of these icons is a story of national pride, both for America and Australia, and their fidelity as the birthplace of modern surfing.
