Greenpeace have closed down a large number of BP petrol stations in London this morning.

The group immobilised 50 petrol stations using the emergency shut-off switches to stop the flow of fuel and then removed them to stop the stations from re-opening.

They also put fences across forecourts and covered the BP logo with a new one where the company's sunflower is submerged in a sea of oil.

The aim of the protest was to pressure BP, who were responsible for the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, to "change their investment strategy".

Says Greenpeace Executive Director John Sauven: "The moment has come for BP to move beyond oil. Under Tony Hayward the company went backwards, squeezing the last drops of oil from places like the Gulf of Mexico, the tar sands of Canada and even the fragile Arctic wilderness. We've shut down all of BP's stations in London to give the new boss a chance to come up with a better plan. They're desperate for us to believe they're going ‘beyond petroleum'. Well now's the time to prove it."
