Sea guardian invokes Musashi spirit
By using one of their forefather's wisdom, Sea Shepherd's choice of operational title hopes to make the Japanese whaling fleet think twice before attempting their cull. Operation Musashi is the 2008/09 mission to stop the planned slaughtering of whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
Miyamoto Musashi was a great samurai warrior, strategist and tactician and a particular influence on Captain Paul Watson, founder and president of Sea Shepherd. Aggressive but non-violent action is the key to Sea Shepherd's success, and the adopted symbols of the pen and the sword (as written about by Musashi in his Five Rings book) hope to reflect that.
"We have never injured a single person in our 31 year history," said Captain Watson, "and we intend to keep that record umblemished." Amen to that.
