Guerrilla ‘subtervising’ in Brighton

The activist group South Coast Climate Camp have been culture jamming in collaboration with Plane Stupid at the expense of the aviation industry in the seaside haven of Brighton.

Speech bubble stickers with the slogans 'Flying is boring' and 'Short haul is for losers' have been pasted up on billboards, bus stops and walls featuring stencil art to try and dissuade people from flying due to the drastic amount of carbon emissions produced as a result.

The group focus on short-haul flights specifically, loosely defined as flights under three hours, to which there are other viable modes of less harmful transport readily available.

  • It's all very well in saying that, indeed there are alternatives to short haul flights, but, for example I looked into getting the train to Copenhagen from the UK, only to find it was going to cost me about 5 x as much as flying. So unfortunately short haul is not just for losers, it's also for people (like me) who, despite their good intentions, don't have the cash to splash on a pricey train ticket.
