Indie film spotlight: Belonging
From Free-Will Productions comes Belonging, a scientific and spiritual journey into humanity's footprint on the Earth.
With narration courtesy of Dustin Hoffman, Belonging addresses the questions we all have regarding the scope of the environmental issues we are faced with, and asks what our priorities should be towards achieving long-term sustainability, and whether looking for alternative energy sources is the answer to all our problems.
Zeroing in on the Inuit communities in the Canadian Arctic, the film examines the impact excessive energy has on humans, animals and the environment, and explains why reduction and conservation are the only viable paths toward long-term sustainability.
This film has a lot to live up to at the moment what with the recent release and success of Franny Armstrong's Age of Stupid, which addresses similar issues. And while Belonging may not be the most stylish of films, it does manage to deliver "a scarifying and ultimately very hopeful message," according to the Vancouver International Film Festival.
Look out for Belonging at all good independent and environmental film festivals this year. Even if it doesn't look like your cup of tea, don't write it off just yet: it has an important message for everyone.
