Boal injured for Hawaii but World Tour awaits
The Reef Hawaiian Pro is well underway as part of the Vans Triple Crown series, for some the last chance saloon of 2009 qualifying. As for Tim Boal, recently crowned 2008 ASP European Champion, its a chance to reflect on a defining season and look forward to the ultimate challenge in competitive surfing - the 2009 ASP World Tour.
The current top 44 surfers are bestrode by a certain Kelly Slater, still chomping at the bit after a ninth title, and there's no doubt he is the main challenge. Before that small mountain Tim must heal the inflamed tendons and ligaments in his foot, which I can personally testify to being a right pain both physically and mentally, due to the patience required in the healing process.
Despite 4 years on the European circuit Tim is rightfully under no illusions about the next stage and it will be the result of dreaming of being a pro surfer since the age of 11 when he started the sport.
"The level of surfing on tour is amazing, everyone is getting better so hopefully I can improve as well. The waves are usually good too which is a good thing, with a variety of pointbreaks, reefs and a few beachbreaks which is perfect. It is fair for everyone and you can really measure yourself against the other guys. I hope Kelly (Slater) will keep going, I want to see him win 10 and it would be cool to be on tour when he makes it."
