Jaime Lerner and Sustainable Cities
“The car is like your mother-in-law: you have to have a good relationship with her, but she cannot command your life. If the only woman in your life is your mother-in-law, you have a problem.”
One of many great analogies Jaime Lerner uses in his talk about sustainable urban living to the TED gathering. His central message is about establishing an overall strategy to city design, as opposed to the materials used to build things, and making the necessary changes fast.
The madness of living out of cities, working in cities or living in one part of the city and commuting to another is simple to understand and his solutions are designed to overcome these habits.
He has managed the change in his home city of Curitiba, Brazil, where he was mayor several times and also governor of Parana State. This has garnered him international recognition, so he obviously knows his onions.
