James Nachtwey launches new photoset
This Friday, the legendary Time Magazine documentary photographer James Nachtwey, will be revealing his latest photoset to the world. Dropping the traditional printed journalism route, Nachtwey intends his launch to revolutionise news photography and reach massive audiences.
Nachtwey has been a documentary photographer for over thirty years. He’s taken extraordinarily powerful images from conflict zones across the world. In 2007, in recognition of his work, Nachtwey was awarded the TED Prize. TED, or Technology, Entertainment and Design, is an organisation on a mission: to bring together these three facets of contemporary media and so spread ideas and change attitudes. Their prize winner is awarded a TED wish, and $100,000 with which to fulfil it.
“There’s a vital story that needs to be told,” said Nachtwey on receipt of his prize, “and I wish for TED to help me gain access to it. And then to help me come up with innovative and exciting ways to use news photography in a digital era.”
And this Friday, the work is revealed. In cities across the globe, Nachtwey’s images will be projected onto the sides of buildings. As yet, the content of the images is undisclosed, although it is known from Nachtwey’s speech that he intends to raise awareness of a currently under-reported global health issue.
In the UK, the unveiling will be supported by the left leaning think tank Demos. Between 8 and 11pm this Friday and Saturday his photographs will be beamed onto the fly tower of the Southbank’s National Theatre. Tracking reaction in the press and blogosphere, will be an exhibition called Emergency Room at East London’s Bacon Street Project from 7 to 22 October.
Check out the images if you can, and come back next week to read HUCK’s reaction and tell us your own.
