Bra Boy joins the global hunt for Monsters
Mark Mathews was having his 21st birthday party when his mates became embroiled in a scrap with off-duty policemen. As a member of the Bra Boys, a group of tough surfers from the Maroubra district of Sydney, he perhaps should have expected this rite of passage.
Now a critically-acclaimed film, Bra Boys is a story of the group from their viewpoint and in particular from the view of the Abberton brothers.
Mathews is a part of the film, naturally, but made his own headlines in surf circles recently by getting signed by O'Neill to pursue more waves like the one above. A big-wave adventurer, he joins a growing strand of surfer willing to drop everything and travel distance to find bigger and bigger surf.
One memorable footnote to his career already is a ride at Pipeline considered one of the best in competition's history. Not a bad spot to make your name.
