Katie Paterson ‘Streetlight Storm’

Conceptual artist Katie Paterson has created Streetlight Storm on Deal Pier, Kent running from December 21 - January 30, 2010.

The amazing light installation, commissioned by Vauxhall Motors under the brief 're-inventing British classics', will flicker in time with actual lightning storms that are occurring around the world, received through an antenna on the pier.

Says Paterson: "I am interested in the way the ordinary and the otherwordly intersect, and much of my work uses everyday technologies from doorbells to record players and connecting with vast and intangible phenomena such as dying stars and the moon. I hope the work's universal content will ignite the imagination of many."

There will be a short talk from the artist at the pier at 4.30pm on December 21.

  • It flickers whenever there is a storm somewhere in the world? So in other words, it is just a standard street light that may or may not malfuction once in a while. Sorry to be pedantic, but that is not particularly impressive. Maybe the mechanics of it happening at the same time as an event elsewhere in the world is difficult to arrange but the action itself is weak. Could they not project a bat signal into the sky whenever a storm happens somewhere in the world? Or, I dunno... something else that it actually impressive.

  • Maybe not impressive to you, but as with all art appreciation is subjective. Just like music, you don't like it all, even if you prefer a certain genre. If you haven nothing positive to say why say anything?
