All hail Kelly!

Kelly Slater made history in Puerto Rico yesterday as he clinched the 2010 ASP World Title and became world champion for the 10th time.

The indomitable surfer from Cocoa Beach sailed through his final heat against Adriano De Souza, scoring a perfect 10, and increased his lead to the extent that Jordy Smith, ranked next behind him, will not be able to close the gap at Pipe in December.

To commemorate the incredible accomplishment our next issue of HUCK is dedicated to the man behind the machine, Kelly Slater himself. We caught up with the demigod during the Quiky Pro in Hossegor and he spoke to us candidly about his feelings, hopes and aspirations. As well as an exclusive interview with Slater and photos from behind the scenes of the World Tour, you can read our tribute to Andy Irons and discover some other legends in the worlds of surf, skate and snow too.

Slater totally revolutionised professional surfing. He is both the youngest and oldest person to ever win an ASP World Title and has more than doubled Mark Richards' previous World Title record of four wins. He has, in his twenty-odd years of professional surfing, won more elite tour events than any other surfer – a phenomenal 45 victories.

The final days of the Rip Curl Pro Search were marred by the tragic death of three-time world champion Andy Irons on Tuesday. But despite a lay day out of respect, the world’s best surfers returned to form last week to pay homage to the talented Hawaiian in the best way they know how. Speaking after the momentous win, Kelly said: “I want to dedicate this to Andy and my family.”

Kelly’s win is a golden rosette on surfing’s international timeline and an inspiration to any surfer or person who believes in the impossible.
