Kevin Crawford sneaker prints
Remember those awesome hand-drawn sneaker illustrations in HUCK#015? Well, artist Kevin Crawford is producing a series of prints of iconic sneakers available exclusively in the HUCK shop.
What's most impressive about the illustration is that it's all done painstakingly by hand using a combination of pointillism, tonal stippling and hatching techniques.
This limited-edition series begins with the 1985 Nike Air Jordan I. This hi-top made its debut in 1985 during Michael Jordan’s rookie season with the Chicago Bulls.
This was one of the very first colorways to be released and was controversially banned from the NBA for violating its colour code policy.
The league officially deemed the AJIs to be “too colourful” and banned them from the court. However, Jordan continued to wear the sneakers and was fined $5,000 per game for the pleasure - a sum Nike was only too happy to pay.
Although not specifically designed for the 80’s skate scene, the AJI was embraced by skaters all the same.
Says DC Shoes co-founder Ken Block: “The original Jordan’s really influenced the way skateboard shoes are today. The simple sole design, the way that the panels on the upper work, that type of thing. And that evolved into the Dunk, and evolved into many of the skateboard shoes that are out today.”
