Laura Marling is starting to make waves
I first saw Laura Marling live by accident when she turned up in London's Chinatown after having been kicked out of the launch party for her single for being underage. She played a short unplugged set (without even a microphone) while the whole bar watched in raptured silence, the kind of silence that happens when people realise they're witnessing something pretty special.
Since then she has been hailed as the most exciting thing to happen in music this year but she's still under the mainstream's radar, probably because she doesn't fit into the white female soul singer mould of Duffy, Adele et al.
She does however have a knack for writing memorable tunes, on her debut album 'Alas I Cannot Swim' she has achieved a near perfect mix. When I say perfect, there are rough edges and songs that don't work but debut albums should be all about promise not perfection, and it's full to the brim with the former.
I highly recommend catching her live in Europe throughout April and May. She's also playing the brilliant End of the Road Festival in September.
