Rell Sunn mural in Biarritz
Celine Chat paints mural of iconic women's surfer.
The huge memorial, measuring 20ft x 13ft, was put up outside Garage Foch as part of the Surf Art Festival in Biarritz. It was inspired by one of Sunn's classic surfing postures in the documentary Heart of the Sea by Keiko Beatie.
Rell Sunn was a pioneer for women's surfing in the 60s and 70s and helped pave the way for the Gilmores and Gabeiras of today. She was also known for her charitable work setting up the Rell Sunn Educational Fund which included raising awareness for breast cancer, which she lost her life to in 1998.
