The North Pole is on thin ice

It appears that for the first time in the recordable history of humans the great ice sheets that cover the North Pole may disappear this year.
In a strange way, the fact that you may be able to sail to the North Pole could be regarded as just another point to reference when discussing the state of our planet, however the North Pole is supposed to be a baron wilderness of raw winds, freezing temperatures and most of all thick sea ice.
