The pipes are playing and the north sea’s churning as the surfing world’s bravest head north to Thurso, Scotland, for the 2008 O’Neill Highland Open.

At 59 degrees north, this is the coldest and northernmost surfing event on the ASP calendar. With its icy water, biting northern winds and heavy barrels breaking over a shallow stone ledge, only the truly hardcore need apply.

Tune into O’Neill TV or huckmagazine.com for live webcast and news. The event runs from April 23-30.

While we wait for the kickoff, here’s a taster to get you going.

  • If it was taking place at 55 degrees north, that would have it happening in Newcastle. It’s 59 degrees north. And, it’s not as cold up here as everyone thinks.
