Palau shark sanctuary
Pacific island creating world's first safe haven for sharks.
The President of Palau, Johnson Toribiong, will announce the establishment of this 620,000 sq km sanctuary to the UN General Assembly in New York today. He will also call for a global ban on shark finning.
The waters of Palau in the western Pacific is home to over 130 species of sharks including hammerheads, leopard and oceanic whitetip sharks.
