Peetu wins TAC and TTR World Tour
Snowboarding's quiet guy, Peetu Piiroinen, takes top spot at Oslo comp.
Unassuming Finnish snowboarder Peetu Piiroinen stormed his way to the top spot on Sunday at the Oakley Arctic Challenge in Oslo, Norway.
Thanks to a string of runs that wowed the judges and gathering crowds, the 21-year-old walked away from this year’s slopestyle format with a healthy prize package of $35,000USD and an extra 1000 TTR points.
The win at Tryvann Vinterpark also secures Peetu the prestigious title of TTR World Champion for the second time. This ahead of the final 6-star event on the tour, the Burton US Open, in two weeks time.
With five obstacles to overcome, Peetu stomped a winning run that went a little something like this: a switch cab 270 to fakie on the top rail, frontside 540 melon on the Protest canon rail, backside 1080 late cork, backside rodeo 720 and a mammoth frontside crail on the hip.
And as if that bag of tricks wasn’t impressive enough, Peetu executed each hit with the same composure and flow that saw him podium at every other 6-star event on the tour this year.
Modest as ever, Peetu says: “I really didn't expect to win here at the Arctic Challenge, but I knew that I had a good chance to take the title here. It feels so good to take both. And it is the second title in a row. Now I can take it easy and maybe drink a beer.”
With Norwegians Torstein Horgmo and Mikkel Bang taking second and third place respectively, it was a good a day for this part of the globe.
As Peetu says: “Oslo is pretty much like my home in Finland, and this is one of the best contests I could ever hope to ride at. It’s nice - no pressure.”
The Arctic Challengeis sponsored by Protest.
