‘Petropolis’ trailer
New film documenting the devastating impact of the Alberta tar sands.
Filmmaker Peter Mettler has written and directed a new film called Petropolis that gives an unparallelled view of the oil extraction at the Alberta tar sands.
Shot primarily from a helicopter, the film gives a jaw-dropping yet frightening impression of the sheer scale and impact this industry is having on the wilderness.
The tar sands are an area of northern Canada size of England which are hold the world's second largest reserve of crude oil. Yet extracting the oil that is suspended in the sands is a costly and water intensive process that results giant toxic lakes causing massive environmental damage.
