Photographer Guy Martin seriously injured
HUCK collaborator wounded while covering the uprising in Libya.
HUCK photographer and friend Guy Martin has been seriously injured while on an assignment in Misrata, Libya.
Guy was injured by shrapnel from a mortar attack while working alongside award-winning photographers Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, both of whom were tragically killed in the attack.
A fourth photographer, Michael Christopher Brown, was also injured in the attack but his condition is not believed to be life threatening.
According to Guy's girlfriend, journalist Polly Fields, he's currently in a serious but stable condition after undergoing over six hours of surgery. He is conscious and is even reported to be making "Guy jokes" but remains in intensive care and needs to be evacuated.
Says Fields: "Guy knew it was very dangerous - he spoke to me over the week and stressed how dangerous it was, but that they were all taking the precautions and traveling together in groups - as you know Tim and Chris were both very experienced."
Guy was in Misrata to cover the conflict between rebels and government forces on behalf of photo agency, Panos Pictures.
As a quite simply amazing documentary photographer, he routinely travelled to many fields of conflict including South Ossetia, Palestine and southern Sudan to tell the poignant stories of the individuals affected in his own sensitive, intelligent and insightful style.
We've commissioned Guy to work for HUCK on many occasions, including documenting the Cold Water Classic South Africa for our photographic brief series; taking portraits of UK war veterans finding rehabilitation through surfing; spending five days with Kelly Slater for our HUCK#023 cover feature; and, most recently, shooting a story on female streetcar racers in Ramallah, Palestine that is due to be published in HUCK#026.
Says HUCK Editor Andrea Kurland: "Guy is just an incredibly determined person and it shows through in everything he does. The way he can find the human side to any story has been an inspiration to us, really. When you're out with him on an assignment, you start to understand how he captures the moments that he does; whether he's chasing after Kelly Slater, throwing himself down some backcountry run or documenting a humanitarian crisis, Guy approaches everything with the same appetite - and that's a rare and impressive thing to see. He has a wonderful way with people, and an incredible sense of the stories that bind us all. And he's just an awesome dude to be around. Which is why the community he's helped foster is now rallying together and looking forward to him coming home."
Writer Michael Fordham, who worked alongside Guy on the Kelly Slater feature, also had this to say: "I admired Guy's work a lot before I got to work with him whilst chasing Kelly Slater around Biarritz in Autumn 2010. Meeting him confirmed for me his possession of that sensitive human touch that all great, committed photojournalists possess. He's an unassuming, funny, sincere and, dare I say it, slightly kooky character that disarms and charms at the same time. You can't help but like Guy and admire his commitment to tell stories from where the tectonic plates of history meet. That the danger got the better of him in Misrata and, tragically, his equally-talented colleagues, shouldn't call foul on the profession he has so passionately pursued."
As well as his giving us awesome photographs, Guy can also be credited for adding the unique term 'shadow capturer' to the HUCK vocabulary!
We wish him a very speed recovery.
