Recycled Island
A group of Dutch architects have proposed to bold new development called Recycled Island to tackle the problem of marine litter.
Whim Architecture have released plans for a floating island the size of Hawaii to be contructed from the 44million tonnes of plastic waste that currently sits in the North Pacific gyre.
The aim is to create a self-sufficient island for up to 500,000 people, powered by wave and solar energy and with land set aside for agriculture and seaweed cultivation.
As dystopian as this sounds, it does sound more desirable than the entire world 's ocean ecosystem being destroyed by plastic waste.
