BP tar sands scandal
Protesters shame oil firm for its unethical decision to exploit the Canadian tar sands.
After two weeks of protest from climate campaigners, BP faced a barrage of criticism from investors at their annual general meeting yesterday over the environmental and financial cost of its controversial tar sands oil project.
The Fortnight Of Shame protests, led by activist groups such as Rising Tide, Camp For Climate Action and the UK Tar Sands Network, peacefully shut down BP petrol stations across the country, culminating yesterday in time for the BP annual general meeting.
And although BP is expected to be successful in opposing a resolution that asks for a report detailing the risks associated with tar sands extraction, the level of protest, reports the Guardian, has caused a lot of embarrassment for the company.
Says climate campaigner Robyn Monaghan: "BP’s planned investment in tar sands is utterly unacceptable. We want everyone to know that BP have abandoned their slogan ‘Beyond Petroleum’ by funding this project which will cause irreversible climate change."
