Sea Shepherd goes it alone to protect whales
This is not an image you will be seeing this winter in the Southern Ocean. Greenpeace are taking the low road in the fight to stop whaling, and looking inside Japan for political support. This means no direct action on the high seas alongside Sea Shepherd to physically prevent the whale slaughter, and leaving Captain Paul Watson and his team to fight alone.
Needless to say this has gone down badly with the Sea Shepherd organisation and Watson himself: “As a Greenpeace co-founder, I am deeply offended that Greenpeace has been raising millions of dollars in the name of defending whales all year and now two weeks before the Japanese whaling fleet is scheduled to depart, they announce they will not be going.”
Greenpeace are at pains to focus on the plight of two activists being held in Japan for allegedly stealing whale meat they say was bound for the black market. They also want to build an anti-whaling coalition there.
Whatever the motives, anti-whaling is now back under the spotlight as the Sea Shepherd crew prepare to leave for the Southern Ocean once again. We will follow and support with interest, with hope the illegal actions come to an end for good.
