Sea Shepherd exposes mass whale slaughter

Sea Shepherd have recently uncovered mass slaughter of whales in the Faroe Islands.

The campaign group captured undercover footage of pod of 236 pilot whales being ritually slaughtered in the town of Klaksvik.

Sea Shepherd Undercover Operative Peter Hammarstedt had been living on the island for a week when he witnessed this cull known as 'the grind'. The grind sees pods of whales herded into coves before they are slaughtered with knives and machetes.

Says Hammarstedt: “One whale had five to six brutal chops to her head. The islanders basically used her as a chopping board. Her death would have been slow and extremely painful. Some whales are hacked repeatedly for up to four minutes before they finally die.”

This cull is similar to the annual Taiji dolphin slaughter in Japan as documented in the film, The Cove. Sea Shepherd has been opposing and confronting this tradition since 1985.

Pilot whales are classified as “strictly protected” under the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, and therefore this cull is a direct contravention of this.

  • Tiony- what exactly do you mean? Cuz if it means what I think then I pity you.

I don't understand what they could possibly acheive with this massacre. Do they use the whales or just do it for fun? This is absolutely ridiculous and it makes me sick. YAY Sea Shepherd and Peter Hammarstedt for this!!! I hope they bring this to the attention of those able to do something about it.

    Completely horrific and appaling!!!

  • There is not much diffrerence between cow, pig and checken. and some people like "New Age" believe cult of Whale/Dolphin is silly.

  • This is utterly repulsive. There is a major difference between farming animals for food and this. It appears just to be a barbaric massacre for nothing other than 'tradition'. 236 is a huge number. nyone even remotely sane may hve butchered a few and thought 'this is enough'.
