Sea Shepherd succeeds with Operation Migaloo

Five-and- a-half weeks and not a single whale killed. The presence of the Steve Irwin and her crew ensured maximum disruption for whaling fleets over the killing season, enough to save many whales and keep the topic front page news worldwide.

Being shot at and hit has not deterred Captain Paul Watson from promising relentless protection for whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. The aim is to return in December 2008 and continue the fight.

For now they will regroup and concentrate on the other campaigns revolving around shark finning, seal hunting, the Galapagos Islands, the Taiji slaughtering and doubtless many more. As ever, we wish them well.

  • Great to hear that they've kept any whales from being killed.

What I don't get is Norway, Iceland and Japan seem like pretty good countries in so many respects but they seem obsessed with killing these animals for so called 'scientific research' (really, how do they keep peddling this lie?).

Keep up the good work Sea Shepherd!

  • Hello,
It is great that Sea Shepherd kept the whales from being killed.
But we cannot forget Greenpeace’s efforts!

The Esperanza chased the Japanese whaling factory ship for 2 weeks, saving over 100 whales. Also they are furthering the battle on land in two main ways; campaigns in Japan to create strong internal pressure on the government to end whaling and working internationally to use the power of the International Whaling commission to ban all whaling. Surely this will have a more long-term impact than the immediate actions being carried out in the Southern Ocean at present?

Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace are both fighting for a worthy cause, three cheers for both organizations!!!

  • Totally agree Roseldoff - respect to Greenpeace too for their sterling efforts against whaling.
