Skindog demands respect on big waves
Traditional paddle-in surfing is the mark of respect on big waves, despite the obvious risks involved. "If you want respect you have to dig deep and prove that you can paddle into a big one on your own when its heavy," so says Ken 'Skindog' Collins. When you factor in the environmental aspect of not having a jetski involved, its not hard to understand the reasoning.
Skindog won the Billabong XXL Ride of the Year last year and he goes further to call tow-in "cheating" if riders don't have the fundamental skill to paddle in to the big ones for starters, conditions allowing.
Fortunately for Ben Andrews, shown here at Mavericks, he will count Skindog's respect (amongst many others) as his, having paddled in to a wave considered monstrous enough for the Monster Paddle category in this year's Awards.
Huck favourite, Maya Gabeira, has also been throwing it down at Waimea Bay along with Jamilah Star and Jenny Useldinger. Check the Award site for footage.
