Slater wins 11th ASP World Tour
Kelly makes surf history yet again.
Kelly Slater has won the ASP World Tour for an historic 11th time.
The surf superstar claimed this victory at the Rip Curl Pro Search in San Francisco by getting to the third round of the competition and so guaranteeing him enough points to secure the title.
Says Slater: "The 10th World Title seemed harder to me [...] This year, that was done and I could put it in the past. [I] was a little bit under the radar and I felt like I started off fresh. Part of it is people always talk about my age and you know I’m 39, almost 40, and to me that’s literally just a number. You can prove people wrong and stay super healthy. I don’t see why at 50 I can’t be in better shape than I am now."
This victory is made especially poignant by it happening on the one-year anniversary of the passing of Andy Irons, the former three-times ASP World Champion and once bitter rival to Slater who later became a close friend.
[UPDATE: Kelly was accidentally awarded this prematurely due to a mathematical error on behalf of the ASP. However, after simple use of a calculator, he was re-awarded the title when he progressed to the final rounds of the competition on November 5.]
