South African Nuclear Surf Redux
I reported in HUCK issue #10 that a number of prime South African surf spots were under threat as they had been earmarked as sites for potential nuclear power stations.
I’m happy to say that shortly after the article was published I found out that two of the sites, on a remote farm on the West Coast north of Elands Bay, have been removed from the list and are safe for now.
However this does increase the odds that one of the two two surfing areas on the East Coast is going to be the site of a pebble bed reactor, which kind of sucks for the locals.
The most likely is quite near J-Bay and the surf community there has recently been mobilised by the Supertubes surfing environmental organisation to get active and thwart our energy parastatal Eskom’s plans to build on this site.
