Could Street Dreams be the first film about skateboarding that doesn't completely suck?

Street Dreams site launches

About a year ago I interviewed Rob Dyrdek for another magazine that has since closed it's doors. Amongst a handful of other serious projects that Rob had been working on, one that he was substantially amped on was a skateboard movie project entitled Street Dreams.

Rob had written the script with his buddy Nino Scalia and at the time of our interview, the shooting of the film had already been wrapped.

I was interested to know more. Not just because Ryan Sheckler, Paul Rodriguez, Terry Kennedy and Dyrdek himself were starring in the thing, but also because a film about skateboarding that didn't completely suck had yet to be done.

If you don't believe me, please refer to Thrashin, Gleaming The Cube and Grind. All about skating, all are absolute shit.

Well, I had almost forgotten all about the film until now.

Street Dreams now has an official website, complete with a trailer of the film and a bunch of other stuff to get you lost for a good while. And for the record, Rob assured me that the film would not suck.

We'll have to wait and see.

  • "360 slip to crooked grind down a handrail, you are living in a fantasy world" - that sounds so wack (not the trick, the script). I bet it turns out to be the skate equivalent of 'the fast and the furious'

Paranoid Park was pretty good tho

  • i hope to be proven wrong, but this will probably be a big steaming pile of gash pie.

  • Sorry Jay but that trailer looks like shit. Such clichéd trash.

adhesif - I agree Paranoid Park is the closest thing to a great skate movie that I've ever seen.

  • I think the problem is when the film takes skateboarding as it's primary focus rather than having it as a small element that adds a little flavour, e.g Paranoid Park.

King of controversy Larry Clark's film 'Wassup Rockers' makes for a nice little watch, though suffers from some bad acting and a very bizarre moment at a party in a mansion.

Probably an unpopular choice but Lords of Dogtown ain't too bad either.

It all depends how fussy you are I guess!

  • Alexander, yeah, I think you are right.

Any attempt to fictionalise any activity like skateboarding and 'understand' it usually just comes across as cheesy and super-fake.

It's usually the product of corporate group think and resembles sewage..

  • The bit where the heelflipping hoodlums are scheming to 'cut the knobs off the university hand rail' has come straight from Danny Ocean's yarn round at Tishcoff's villa about the exact manor in which to acquire the dollar from the Bellagio. As for the rest, my oh my...

  • Check out the plot summary on IMDB...

There is no way in hell this movie will be good. In fact, there is no way in hell this is going to get a release.

  • The IMDB summary sounds like a cross between "the Wizard" (90 minute sales tool for Nintendo) and the Karate Kid (no explanation required).

Also, Gleaming the cube, while rubbish, sustained my skate fix when I was a child and access to skate videos was difficult. First exposure to Rodney's wizadry too.

  • If somebody ever makes an updated version of The Wizard crossed with Karate Kid, I think I might die of happiness.

  • The Wizard crossed with Karate Kid sounds AWESOME.

    This movie does not.

  • What the hell is with J-Wizz? With the extreme spelling deficiency and aggressive homophobia, he (I presume it's a he) is the sort of knucklehead who would enjoy such tripe as Street Dreams. Idiot!
