The Style Makers: Danny Sangra

In a fashion era dominated by vanishing waistlines and swollen price tags, streetwear remains a sanctuary for the truly inspired.

HUCK went in search of the talented tribe who bring style to the street. The result? A series of interviews with some of the most influential minds in streetwear today. Lap up their words and feel your street cred rise.

Name: Danny Sangra

Streetwear Credentials: Gravis collaborating artist

Location: London

Tell us a bit about yourself. Go ahead, open up.
I'm originally from Leeds and I moved to London when I was 19 to study graphic design at Central St Martins. When I finally finished education I found myself living the pennyless but very creative lifestyle of an artist.

How would you describe your place in streetwear?
I think my graphics are quite unusual for streetwear, I guess that’s the appeal. My work has never been very commercial and it's taken years for people to work out how to use it. I just care about doing interesting projects regardless of anything else. That's why projects like the Gravis project worked so well. They just let me do my thing. I'm also working with my friend Lynda Needles on our own label called A Minute Silence. We usually only do one off items but I'm interested to see where it might go. I just want to put a few bits out every now and then just to see what happens.

What inspires you?

My past and where I've come from.

How is your work rooted in skate, surf or snowboard culture?
Growing up I listened to punk so I ended up hanging out with a crowd of skaters and kids in punk bands. Painting boards and doing flyers and stuff. Most of my visual influences came from punk flyers and skate graphics. I mean, who couldn't be influenced by Vision graphics?

Any dreams you wanna share with us?
Hmmm, maybe at some point I'd like to get a book published because I have so much work in a back catalogue it would be nice to see it all together. Generally though I just want to continue doing what I'm doing.

Let’s get all philosophical about fashion. What exactly is ‘streetwear’?
Stuff you can look good in while fucking around.
