Surfrider Europe ‘Plastic is not Automatic’ campaign
Ditch the plastic bag and help remind others to do the same.
Surfrider Foundation Europe have launched a new Ocean Initiative for 2011, Plastic is not Automatic.
The campaign is encouraging people to get their local shops to put a special sticker on their tills to remind customers to find alternatives to plastic bags for their shopping.
You can request these stickers from Surfrider. Once they've been stuck in your local shop, send in a picture and plot the shop on the Surfrider map. Those with the most shops stickered up will win prizes!
According to Surfrider, over 500 billion plastic bags are produced each year. Their lifespan is extremely short yet they don't degrade, instead finding their way into the ocean where they poison marine wildlife.
In fact, the problem is so bad that there are now five plastic-choked gyres throughout the world's oceans, creating a plastic bag soup that is mistaken by food by wildlife and passed up the food chain with devastating consequences.
The plastic trapped in the The North Pacific gyre is approximately the size of France!
Go get involved.
