Surfrider Foundation Europe have launched their Stop Oil Spill petition to pressure the European Union into installing a moratorium on all new oil drilling across Europe.
The petition stems from the recent Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico and fears that a similar catastrophe could occur in European seas.
According to Surfrider, a number of measures are urgently required for existing rigs to eliminate chemical disposal into the sea, impose tougher safety measures and limit their greenhouse gas emissions.
Says Surfrider: "As long as safety standards and the polluter pays principle are not actively enforced in the offshore oil drilling business, Surfrider is demanding a moratorium on all new offshore oil-drilling activities in Europe. [...] We state unequivocally that renewable sources of energy must be systematically prioritized over fossil fuels."
