Surfrider ‘Not The Answer’ campaign
New drive to restore moratorium on offshore drilling.
Surfrider Foundation have launched a campaign to restore a moratorium on offshore drilling in light of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.
The conservation organisation is inviting people to join a letter writing campaign to pressure President Obama to restore the ban on new offshore drilling that was introduced in light of the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989.
The Deepwater Horizon rig exploded last month is leaking 210,000 gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico every day. It has the potential to become one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.
Says Surfrider CEO Jim Moriarty: "The unfolding catastrophe clearly illustrates that offshore drilling is not safe and new technology is not fool proof.[...] Clearly the beaches where our families play as well as our coastal economies are at grave risk. Offshore oil and gas production is a dirty and dangerous business and even the latest technologies fail to prevent and contain spills. Please send your letter to President Obama today asking him to reinstate the moratorium on new offshore drilling."
