Susan Casey ‘The Wave’ book
Exploring the phenomenon and pursuit of monster ocean waves.
Susan Casey has just released a book called The Wave that explores the phenomenon of giant ocean waves.
The book charts the history of these inexplicable giants that can reach up to 30 metres in height. Up until as recently as 15 years ago, waves of this nature were considered impossible as both physics and weather models were unable to account for them.
It also documents those such as gig wave surfing pioneer Laird Hamilton who developed tow-in surfing to ride these giants as, according to Hamilton “the best waves in the world were going to waste”.
Casey asks: “What kind of person drops in on Mother Nature’s biggest tantrums for fun? What drives him? And since he has gone into that dark heart of the ocean and felt its beat in a way that sets him apart, what does he know about this place that the rest of us don’t?”
