Tony Hawk: Ride
Does the new game in the series offer a whole new level of realism?!
Ok. So the Tony Hawk series of skate games pretty much killed it at the beginning of the century. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 was the pinnacle. However, after that, there wasn't that many other places the button-mashing series could go - new levels, few extra features and some quite frankly stupid mini-games that had absolutely nothing to do with skating. And so racking up billion point combos or stopping a bank robbery on your board soon got pretty dull.
EA saw a gap in the market and bought out the excellent Skate, taking skate games back to basics and understanding the sheer less-is-more joy of nailing a smooth kickflip down a few steps - it filled a void in so many lives. Tony Hawk was finished...
..or so it seemed. Taking a leaf out of the Wii's new approach to gaming controls, Activision are hoping to give their tired series a much needed shot in the arm with a new peripheral controller. It looks like a skate deck and yeah, you stand on it like one to control the game.
Whether or not its any good remains to be seen. Tony Hawk: Ride will be out on Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 at the end of the year.

First day, little Johnny tries to flip it and it goes flying off into the drinks cabinet. Dad's cognac quickly disperses across the shag pile to the dog’s delight and Mum comes in screaming blue murder. In an instant this expensive and long-demanded piece of kit is consigned to the garage or an eBay auction with no reserve.
Mark my words. Parents will hate this.
