Mark Visser ‘Jaws at Night’ video
Charging the Maui break in the dark.
Australian surfer Mark Visser has just released this video of him surfing Jaws at night.
The impressive feat saw the 28-year-old take to the water at 2:00am with specially engineered LED lights in his buoyancy vest surfboard to tackle the legendary Hawaiian break off the shore of Maui.
The team used groundbreaking submarine lighting pioneered by NASA to illuminate Visser and the wave without hindering the vision of Visser, the jet skiers and the helicopter pilots.
Says Visser: “It wasn’t until I saw the pictures I realised how big it was. This project has been two years in the planning and it was the scariest, but most exciting thing I have ever done. [...] Riding in complete darkness meant I had to go off feeling. I had to zone out from how you normally ride and just be part of the wave."
This stunt is just one of many 'world firsts' from Visser that will form a documentary, 9 Lives, set to be released late 2011.
