Santa Cruz & Ericeira surf reserves
Iconic surf spots are awarded protected status.
The Save the Waves Coalition has officially named the two iconic surf spots of Santa Cruz, California and Ericeira, Portugal as World Surfing Reserves.
These two sites were chosen for their quality and consistency of waves; their cultural and historical significance to surfing; their environmental characteristics; and the surfing community that surrounds them.
The Santa Cruz reserve is roughly 11km of coastline extending from Natural Bridges to Opal Cliffs and includes iconic cold water breaks of Steamer Lane and Pleasure Point.
The Ericeira reserve consists of 4km of coastline that includes the renowned Ribeira d’Ilhas beach that has played host to many ASP World Tour contests.
This dedication means that the Save the Waves Coalition will seek to protect these coastal regions from inappropriate development, and encourage conservation and environmentally-conscious stewardship through partnerships with local and international authorities.
These two iconic surf will join Malibu, California and Manly Beach in Sydney, Australia that were dedicated World Surfing Reserves in 2010.
