Baron interview
Baron spent four years making an original soundtrack for Flip's Extremely Sorry featuring collaborations with Lemmy from Motorhead, Warren G and Snoop Dogg. HUCK caught up with the UK producer to find out how it all started.
HUCK: Can you tell us a little about your past work?
Baron: I am a DJ an producer from the UK. I now live in LA. My background is electronic music. I began working with Flip Skateboards 4 years ago and have moved my work into the area of soundtracks and producing bands and artists.
How did you get the opportunity to work on the Extremely Sorry Soundtrack?
I met Geoff Rowley through a mutual friend in Huntington Beach, California. I did a little audio correction work with them in 2003. I went back to England, came back and then we hatched a cunning plan to revolutionise skateboarding.
Are you involved in the skate industry in any way or was this simply a business venture?
I have been skateboarding since I was nine. I quit when I found music and clubs around 17 but I have always maintained an interest in skating. This was the perfect way for both worlds to integrate.
What input did the skaters have in shaping the soundtrack?
Everyone in the team had substantial input at the planning stages. It was highly important to have approval and cooperation from everyone. Creatively, I would obviously take care of things and myself and Geoff would work through the forks in the road. It came together really well.
Why did you choose to work with these artists?
We had a hit list of people we wanted to work with. We reached out to them and they all agreed. We nailed all the collaborations in just three weeks. It was a total blur. Working with Lemmy was great - he was a total gentleman. Dave Lombardo (Slayer) is quite simply a demonic drumming beast. I'm convinced he sleeps with a metronome on. He was inch perfect.
What was the most difficult part of making the album?
Keeping the album coherent across so many genres was extremely difficult. Towards the end it became easier when we knew we had a solid soundtrack. I'm 100% happy with the way it turned out.
Do you have any upcoming projects?
Baron solo album. Producer on the Dave Lombardo solo record. New Flip DVD.
Do you think you will work with Flip Skateboards again?
Flip and Baron are family.
The Extremely Sorry Soundtrack is out now on Volcom Entertainment.
