Jeff Curtes interview

HUCK: Could you tell us a little bit about your photos in the exhibition?
Jeff Curtes: My photos are about showing great snowboard photography shot in beautiful environments. I've included my most requested shot to date in the exhibition, the record smashing shot of Ingemar Backman taken in Rikgransen, Sweden back in 1996. It's called ‘The Method'. There's also ‘The Slit' with Frederik Kalbermatten taken in Methven, New Zealand in August 2007 and ‘Terje Haakonsen' from Methven Heli, New Zealand taken in August 2008. That one made the Transworld Snowboarding Photo Annual Cover!

What inspires you about photography?
Powerful, real moments, the emotion and the rawness.

How did you get into photography?
I got into photography with my brother Joe in the late 1980's. I was documenting our snowboarding experiences from day one.

Which is more important; technical skill or having an 'eye' for a shot?
The most important thing is feeling - having a sensitivity to people, places and things. As well as a confidence and a respect on engagement with them.

Do you feel that people fully appreciate the work that goes into a shot?
That's up to them really.

Does the rise of digital make photos more disposable?
Digital has simply made photography more accessible, not disposable.

What do you do when the snow season is over? Is there anything that you photograph?
When the snow is gone, I photograph my family.
