Favourites: Dr Syntax
Finding out the all important what, where, when, who and why from the UK hip hop artist.
In a new regular feature for HUCKmagazine.com, we ask the great, the good and the down right talented about the things that mean the most to them.
We caught up with one of the UK's most eloquent emcees Dr Syntax at the launch of his new album Benny Huge in London to find out what makes him tick.
What?
My Kit-Cat Clock that hangs on my living room wall. It looks a bit like Felix the Cat. It’s one of those clocks that the tail wags and the eyes move. It’s just so ridiculous. I’m quite a childish adult I think. While I wouldn’t walk around with a Scooby Doo t-shirt on, I feel it’s got that nice balance of something that’s a little bit classy and you’ve got to seek it out. You can’t buy it in Woolworths. Kit-Cat Clocks is something that’s been going for years in America. I can’t believe it’s my favourite thing in the world but I think it is!
Where?
Manchester. I moved up there six months ago as London was just a little bit too hectic for me. The thing I love about Manchester is that there is an enthusiasm and a real sense of potential, not just in hip hop but in all types of music. People really give a shit about music: there’s a lot of passionate people. The Northern Quarter is a whole area that was quite derelict and shit is now full of boutiques and nice little pubs. It’s beautiful and you can just get around everywhere. I’m doing my bit for the tourist board right now. It’s not all about London and what’s going on there.
When?
In terms of a point in your life, I’d have to say right now. I really like being in my late 20s. You don’t have all that angst of being a teenager or even an adult in their early 20s just trying to work out who they are and what they are doing. For our generation, you can do what you want. I can do rapping and pass it off as a career in a certain way. Right now is an exciting time.
Who?
I don’t have too many idols I have to say. Everyone I can think of has massive flaws. I was going to say Slick Rick but that would be saying that I’m advocating shooting at people out of a speeding motor. I could say Devon the Dude but that would be advocating being horrific in your opinions of females. I could say Nelson Mandela but that would make me sound like David Cameron. No Gods. No Idols. That’s the answer. [laughs]
Why?
This is really selfish but just to entertain myself in an economical way. Making music and going out and doing as many shows as I can – whether they will be bigger shows or the same circuit around the UK – it’s important for me to have that outlet. Here’s the David Brent bit, ‘if it entertains people, then that makes me feel all the more warm hearted and self satisfied’. [laughs]
Benny Huge is out now on Dented Records.
