John Cardiel bonus interview
Previously unpublished extract from the HUCK#025 cover feature interview about Cardiel's passion for shooting guns.
Many know John Cardiel as a skateboarder: 1992 Thrasher Skater of the Year, one of the key figures behind Anti Hero Skateboards and the man who inspired a generation of skaters to take on fearless terrain charging as a way of life.
Others know him as a fixed gear rider, taking on the bike with the same zeal as skateboarding after a tragic accident in 2003 left him temporarily paralysed and unable to skate like he once did.
There’s also the John who is fan of Rastafarianism: who spins dub and reggae on the decks and is generally a figurehead of stoke, positivity and loving life.
But there’s another side to John, that of gun owner…
HUCK: So, what got you into guns?
John Cardiel: Basically my friend had property and we used to go shoot his .22 [rifle]. I felt bad borrowing his gun so I bought myself one. Once you start learning about it you are like, ‘Ah man, this is cool’. But the .22 can only shoot so far so the next gun you want to get is one that shoots further. It’s just like anything you learn.
When was this?
In high school. I used to like BB guns when I was a kid. Basically, I just liked aiming and hitting targets, like throwing a rock at a bottle. Guns are just an extension of that but you are holding something. It’s kind of neat.
Do you go hunting?
Excuse me?! No, we never killed animals or anything like that. It’s funny because there is an old picture of me in Big Brother magazine where I’m holding a dead bird. It looked like we were shooting and had killed it but we just found the bird and I was just holding it up. We were buzzed out because that’s not right.
Are you vegetarian?
Nah, I just try to eat good. Whenever I feel certain things, I just go with them.
What do you make of those wanting to restrict gun ownership in the US?
I think it’s good. They definitely should take it back a bit. Nobody really needs guns, you know? If people are using them for sport and they need them, they should have a gun rental place. They definitely should make it harder for kids to get guns.
Would you happily give up your guns?
Ah man, my gun cost too much money. I can’t be giving away expensive stuff. I really like some of the old western guns. I’ve got one and like to look at it. I wouldn’t want to get rid of it. Knowing that it was a gun, yes I would, but no one wants to give away their things.
