Live, Frenchman Sebastien Tellier licks women’s feet, smokes cigarettes through his nose and pretends he’s a bird. It’s funny once.
In the studio, he’s meticulous and professional - dedicated to songcraft and sound. So it proved with his signature track to date, ‘La Ritournelle’ from his last album Politics - a song so powerful one reviewer had to pull over to the side of the road and weep when he first heard it.
Much of his new album, Sexuality, also combines ecstasy with sadness – it’s euphoria in a minor key – but there are differences. Politics was about space and discovery; Sexuality is about, well, sex - the internal and personal. There is much groaning across the album, Jane Birkin-style, and ample heavy breathing.
You remember Serge Gainsbourg throughout, with some obvious additions: this record was produced by Daft Punk’s Guy Manuel De Homem-Christo. Both clearly adore pop and both take pride in layering music so it has depth and a clean, slippery sheen.
A classy, clever and funny album. Beginners think of a wild amateur classical pianist giving one to a girl that’s way too young for him. His eyes are closed, and he’s dreaming of Michael Jackson.
